PROJECT 1 : CLASSIFICATION OF BUILDING MATERIALS
Building materials are any type of materials that are used for construction purposes. This project is designed as an introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the construction industry. Students are required to choose their choice of architects and their buildings that utilize the listed materials.
The exercise aims in helping the students to explore and understand the materials in terms of its characters, properties and impacts it give to building designs and its environment. The task of this project is to select an architect and their building that utilizes several types of building materials, namely stones, concrete, brick and glass. The students are required to analyze the materials that are used by the Architect for the building that is chosen and produce a presentation board that explains the characters of the building materials and how these materials relate with the surrounding context.
Based on the brief requirements me and my 2 teammates did our research and decided to choose The Barcelona Pavilion designed by the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe .The Barcelona Pavilion had 3 out of the 4 building materials which are stones, concrete and glass. The Barcelona Pavilion was the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The aim of the pavilion was to give luxurious and minimalistic environment which was done brilliantly as the travertine, green marble and the golden onyx wall illumanates the beauty of the stones and they reflect the light into the building. Concrete was used as the roof of the building while the tinted and frosted glass were used to bring the exterior into the building. From this project i learned how the building materials plays a vital role in transforming a space and i also understand the character each materials has in order to get the best use out of them.
The images below is the image of the A2 presentation board consisting the architect’s background, concept of building and explanation about the building materials.

PROJECT 2: : “Materiality of SPACE : An Experiential Exploration”
This assignment is designed to introduce building materials that are commonly used in the construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study will allow one to understand the reasoning behind choices made by designers in terms of concepts, function use, environmental response, environmental profile, structural requirement, availability of resources and etc. when selecting or proposing building materials. It is also essential for students to see the transition from vernacular point of perspective to the current application in built environment.
In this project we are required to form a group of 5 members and investigate how the materials are amplified ,overlaid and combined to provoke desired ambience and atmosphere of the building of our choice. Therefore the building we choose for our case study is Menara OBYU or formerly known as 'Point 92'. We took a visit to the building and explored how the choices of materials played with the visual perspective of the buillding. As I investigated each materials of the building I understand how each materials has it's own strength and weaknesses and with this knowledge one can make the best use of the material for the construction of the building.
The second part of this project is the indiviual work where the students are required to explore and write on the sense of materiality of the space of choice in the same building . For this I chose the outdoor rest area in which I learned so much about the relationship of the materials with the space . Since the space is meant to be an outdoor interactive space I understand how the materials were used in a a way as the medium of transitioning from the outdoor space into the indoor.
